15 Years of London Through My Lens: A Journey in Street Photography

Writer: Șelaru OvidiuȘelaru Ovidiu

London. A stage that never sleeps. A symphony of colours, shadows, and stories. For 15 years, this city has been more than a place to me – it has been a companion, a living museum, and an unrelenting teacher. In every street corner, every reflection on the Thames, I’ve found a story worth telling.

📸 How It All Began

When I first arrived in London, I was overwhelmed by its energy. I quickly realized that the street and the people – actors in fleeting stories- are a stage. I wandered for hours without a map, guided only by curiosity. I wasn’t seeking perfect shots but authentic moments.

My early photos were raw and full of emotion, but they lacked technique. Over time, I learned to anticipate gestures, wait for the perfect light, and blend into the crowd. London became my most outstanding teacher.

📍 Favorite Spots for Street Photography:

  • Soho: Constant energy, from street performers to candid local moments.

  • Southbank: Sunset lights, Thames reflections, and vibrant performers create magic.

  • Camden Town: Bold contrasts, colours, and faces etched with stories.

  • Notting Hill: Pastel serenity, a soft counterpoint to the city's buzz.

    🧩 My Style in London

I embrace authenticity—no staging, just observation. London teaches me patience and listening to its pulse. Some shots take hours of waiting; others happen instantly, instinct guiding me.

I often use 28mm, 35mm, and 50mm lenses which push me to get close to being part of the scene. I shift between colour and black-and-white photography: colours express the city's chaos and energy, while monochrome captures its soul and contrasts.

💡 Lessons from 15 Years on London’s Streets:

  • Patience is key: The best shots come when you wait without rushing.

  • Feel the city: Photography isn’t just seeing—it’s listening, sensing, and connecting.

  • The city changes, but stories remain: Buildings shift, and neighbourhoods evolve, but the emotions and human moments stay timeless.

  • 🖼️ Why I Still Photograph London

Because London never repeats itself. A familiar corner transforms with new lights, faces, and seasons. But above all, because every photograph whispers back: "Ovidiu, this is your story with this city."

I invite you to see London through my eyes—through its lights, rain, chaos, and calm. Ultimately, every photo is a love letter to the city that became my home.
