Why didn’t I limit myself to black-and-white photography?

This is a question I get asked often. Since I started photographing, most of my images have been black and white, with colour appearing in only a few frames. Black and white has a timeless elegance, emphasizing the essence of a scene, pure emotion, and the subtle play of light and shadow.

Quite some time ago, I began studying the colour and exploring the possibilities it offers. My father, a painter, taught me from a young age about compositions, colour combinations, and the nuances of chromatics. His lessons, which back then seemed like play, have found their place in the way I photograph today.

Now, I experiment with shades, contrasts, and chromatic harmonies, discovering how colour can add a new dimension to my stories.

Photography isn’t about choosing between black-and-white or colour but giving each image the appropriate language to convey what I feel and want to share with the viewer. It’s a process of continuous learning, a journey where every frame adds a new piece to the puzzle of my art.

Many photographers limit themselves to black and white, believing it captures emotion or atmosphere better. However, colour plays a pivotal role in a photographer's growth. There are moments and images whose impact cannot be conveyed through monochrome, as colours add depth, vibrancy, and context. Embracing colour allows a photographer to unlock new creative dimensions, transforming an ordinary photograph into a vivid work of art. To truly evolve, a photographer must see colour as a tool and a powerful storyteller in its own right.

For me, street photography is all about capturing authentic and vibrant moments. I use two cameras dedicated to colour photography and two for black-and-white. I enjoy exploring and experimenting with colours to bring an extra dimension to my images. Every colour tells a story, allowing me to capture unique moments full of life and emotion.

I draw inspiration from a rich mix of sources and influences. From painters like Van Gogh, who taught me to appreciate the interplay of warm and cool colours, to well-crafted films that demonstrate how to use chromatics, each source contributes to my growth. I learned how to blend colours personally from two renowned photographers, Joel Meyerowitz and Saul Leiter, whom I study with admiration and intensity. Colour photography is an opportunity to explore the world in its vibrant hues, the opposite of black and white while striving to maintain the same contrast foundations. Every walk on the street becomes a source of inspiration, a chance to observe and combine colours uniquely and personally.

I will never give up on black-and-white photography. I aim to master both styles, colour and black-and-white, with equal dedication and skill. I am committed to continuous growth, climbing step by step, ensuring that every photograph I create—whether in color or black-and-white—reflects the same passion and artistry. I refuse to confine myself to a single style, embracing instead the richness and challenges both approaches bring to capture the world. I will continue as I have, or better, whenever possible.

I hope you felt inspired and motivated to explore new photographic horizons. Keep capturing moments that inspire you and follow your passion! Don’t set limits because art knows no boundaries!
